SERGIOS.COM HONORED AS MOST AUTHENTIC CHAIN OF CUBAN RESTAURANTS IN MIAMI(PRBuzz.com) January 21, 2013 -- Miami is without a doubt one of the most beautiful areas in the country. With beautiful beaches, some of the most desirable real estate, and the most delectable restaurants, what is not to love? Many people travel here to soak in the sun and to enjoy the Cuban restaurants Miami.
Sergio's is one of the top Cuban restaurants Miamians love to come and get a taste of a great food at reasonable prices. Sergio's history started in 1970, when a Cuban family left Cuba due to the Castro regime and moved to the United States. The business idea came from the daughter who expressed her desires of owing an authentic Cuban restaurant in Miami. She wanted to serve fresh, homemade Cuban food to a number of Cubans who are living in South Florida. Today, Sergio's is synonymous with authentic Cuban food and uses only the best and freshest products. At the Florida Restaurant award ceremony last week, Sergio's took home one of the most coveted awards. Because of their Cuban cuisine specialty, they are the most popular and most authentic Cuban restaurant chain in the state.
Mr. Ferrusquia, of the Food Selection Society, introduced the winner of the big award with the following statement: "It is with great pleasure that I introduce to you one of the best Cuban restaurants in Miami. I have been going here for the last couple of years and, I must admit, I can hardly go anywhere else in the city for good Cuban food. That is, unless, I go visit my grandmother in Havana instead. The reason I and so many other visitors love this place is because it's as real as it gets. There is no other chain of restaurants that are as professional, well organized, and down right delicious as this place. So here it is...the winner of this year's award for Most Authentic goes to Sergio's!"

THE BUENA SANDWICH SOCIAL CLUBMany pale people will soon flee their frigid habitats to visit friends and relatives here in the Sunshine State. That means they are coming to our houses. Now I don't know about your out-of-town guests, but as soon as mine unpack their bags, they begin to pester me with predictable questions, one of which is invariably: "Do you know a good Cuban joint?" They don't mean Yuca. My answer, I'm proud to say, is, "Yes, as a matter of fact I do." Then I reel off a few favorites. Sergio's is always among them.
The original Sergio's opened on Bird Road in 1975, and there's a new one in Kendall. But I'm speaking of the Coral Way location, just a few blocks east of Miracle Mile. It's a Latin coffee shop, sparsely adorned and brightly lit, with red and white tables set on a hardwood floor. Past the entrance, on the right side of the room, are large picture windows that look out on the parking lot but mainly reflect neon beer signs; on the left is a counter that seats eight. The mostly Cuban clientele, including many families, clearly enjoys the atmosphere as much as the cleanly prepared, low-priced renditions of their favorite foods.

SERGIO'S SKINNY SELECTIONS: LOW-CAL CUBAN CHOWSergio's, the Cuban coffee shop on Coral Way that has become an institution since first flinging open its doors in 1975, is known for its medianoche, Cubano, and Elena Ruz sandwiches; hearty main-course fare such as vaca frita and boliche asado; frijoles negros; and all sorts of classic Cuban and Latin dishes. This is not diet food.
Now, however, comes Sergio's La Flaca ("the skinny") offerings. "These new menu items were developed with the overall health of our customers in mind," explains a restaurant spokesman.
Soups, salads, and appetizers ($2.99 to $6.99) on this limited bill of fare -- all less than 375 calories -- include shrimp ceviche and whole-wheat empanadas with all-natural chicken breast inside.

THE ELENA RUTH SANDWICH AT SERGIO'SChoosing a favorite sandwich is like choosing a favorite pet. There are many out there that attempt to win you over, but the Elena Ruth at Sergio's ($5.49) is a winner simply because it is so damn scrumptious. Layered with a one-inch thick slab turkey breast slices and cream cheese, drizzled with strawberry jam in between two slices of sweet midnight sandwich bread (like a Cuban version of Challah bread) and flattened in a sandwich press. The bread is crisped to golden-brown perfection and fits right in your hand for flawless eating.
With the strawberry jam flowing over the sides, the Elena Ruth looks like a slice of cake, but it's not--it's a cake-wich. Seriously, this bad mamma jamma can be eaten like dessert if you so choose because the sweetness of the jam combined with the cream cheese and the flakiness of the bread makes it taste that way. Ah, the Elena Ruth--a quintessential Cuban sandwich, many exist elsewhere, but there can be only one.To view the awards, click here
THE SKINNY ON SERGIO'S NEW "FLACA" MENUAuthentic Cuban cuisine is not exactly the best choice for the weight conscious, but Sergio’s new La Flaca menu could change all that.
Putting a healthy spin on their “simple, fresh and homemade” motto, you can now choose steamed vs. pan-fried, brown vs. white rice and baked vs. deep-fried. The new skinny menu boasts no trans fats or salt, and does the portion control for you.
Start with a baked, whole wheat chicken empanada using only natural ingredients for $1.95. Breakfast items start at $3.99 and are under 295 calories. The South Beach Omelet with egg whites, tomatoes, green peppers, onions, and low sodium turkey is sure to satisfy.
Low-calorie tapas and salads featuring La Flaca salad spritzers start at $3.75. The Cuban Cobb salad is a winner consisting of a spring mix with avocado, roasted corn and black beans.

SERGIO’S CROQUETAS BEST IN TOWN - BEST OF MIAMI® 2004 - Food & Drinks
A couple of croquetas from Sergio's are a meal all by themselves. They're not the bite-size variety found at typical Spanish bakeries. But that's not what makes them the best. To begin with, let's acknowledge that a wiener-shaped conglomerate of ground, breaded, fried ham byproduct isn't the most complicated dish within the culinary arts, though simple things often yield the greatest pleasures. So the only trick is to not screw it up, which Sergio's never does. First they grind the cooking ham to its finest consistency; this is so the meat mix inside forms a smooth paste, no chunks. Then ingredients such as grated onions, peppers, and most important, plenty of garlic are added. Finally the croquetas are deep-fried in virgin olive oil. And if you have a midnight craving during the weekend, you don't have to wait till the next day to enjoy them.
OLYMPIC GYMNAST DANELL LEYVA'S SUPPORTERS GATHERED AT SERGIO'S RESTAURANT
The words “individual all-around” competition don’t quite capture Danell Leyva’s bronze-medal performance Wednesday in the Olympics…… At nearby Sergio’s Restaurant in West Kendall, the celebration continued.
When he’s home, Leyva visits the Cuban establishment every Friday night for dinner with his stepfather. Wednesday, the restaurant offered discounted prices on Leyva’s favorite healthy dishes, including avocado salad and Chimi-chicken.
Sergio’s invited the community to cheer on their hometown hero from 6:30 to 9 p.m., hours after the screams from Universal Gymnastics could be heard from the parking lot as Leyva clinched the bronze medal with his horizontal bar routine.
Carlos Gazitua, vice president of Sergio’s, said he wanted to promote Leyva’s efforts in London because Leyva had shown support of Sergio’s by bringing Ryan Seacrest to the restaurant for an interview before the Olympics.
“We wanted to make sure that the community knows how important he is,” Gazitua said. “He represents Miami.”
And representing Leyva at Sergio’s were more members from his gym. Tables overflowed with kids in Universal Gymnastics T-shirts and the catchphrase “Yeessooo” written across their backs.
Ashly Matas, who has known Leyva since he was very young, said everyone at Universal came out to support Leyva on his special night. The group, he said, is tight-knit and constantly supporting each other.
She said his Universal family was spread across two locations Wednesday night. There was another watch party at the Brickell Irish Pub.
“It’s a surreal experience,” Matas said.

SHOPPING = HUNGER AT SERGIO'S BY THE MIAMI HERALD
Felicidades to Sergio's for recognizing this. Our go-to restaurant for home-style Cuban food in Coral Gables and Westchester has expanded with a big branch near the West Kendall Costco and a fast-food counter in a Wal-Mart in Hialeah Gardens.
My new favorite way to end a field trip to Costco is to duck into the Sergio's in the same London Square shopping center for my family's favorites: breaded empanizado steak, pounded so flat and wide that it hangs out of the Styrofoam container, and Chimi-Chicken, a juicy grilled chicken topped with fresh chimichurri sauce.

CUBAN CAFE OPENS AT HIALEAH GARDENS WAL-MART
Sergio's Family Restaurant began serving customers its bistec de palomilla, vaca frita and other signature Cuban dishes earlier this month at the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Hialeah Gardens, 9300 NW 77th Ave.
The restaurant is one of the largest business ventures between Wal-Mart and a Hispanic company. ``It makes me very proud that it's a family-owned restaurant,'' said Hialeah Gardens store manager Raul Cortina, who added that the location is the top grossing in the Wal-Mart chain. ``Our customers will now be able to eat, shop and have enough time to go home and watch the novela.''
The store, which employs more than 720 workers, gets most of its 70,000 customers per week from a nine-mile radius.
SERGIO'S FAMILY RESTAURANTSFor the budget conscious visitor, a trip to Sergio’s Family Restaurants will not only satisfy your budget but your stomach as well. Boasting Cuban cuisine, Sergio’s now has four locations, all designed for any time of the day for visitors. Cuban specialties such as main dishes, pastries, breakfast, sandwiches and whipped desserts are a sure bet when it comes to back to basics food with a flair.
The Cuban Sandwich is reported to be the best in Miami by the locals. Reading the menu is also part of the fun as you will laugh at their use of Spanglish!
